The Internet of Algae: modelling communication across four signaling channels
Algae communicate through chemicals, voltage, and light. The Internet of Algae Lab translates communication-theoretic models for photosynthetic molecular networks into parameter-driven simulations that run in a browser.
The lab covers four signaling modalities:
- Quorum sensing: chemical communication between cells
- Volatile organic compounds (VOCs): airborne chemical signals
- Electrical signaling: communication through voltage changes
- Bioluminescence: communication through emitted light
Users can modify model parameters, visualize signal propagation toward the receiver, and examine attenuation and propagation delay as functions of distance. The lab is a static web page and requires no installation or build step.
The simulations translate models from The Internet of Algae: End-to-End Communication-Theoretic Models for Photosynthetic Molecular Networks, by Ian F. Akyildiz, Selin Sayın, Eyüp İlker Saygılı, and Bige Deniz Ünlütürk, published in IEEE Transactions on Molecular, Biological, and Multi-Scale Communications.
